Install the Contensis install manager

You can get a copy of the Contensis Install Manager from our downloads page. This is a standard windows installer package (MSI) which you just need to run. There are two configurable options.

  • The location where the Contensis Install Manager will be installed.
  • Whether the Contensis Install Manager should be available to all users or just the current one.

Once the installer has finished the Contensis Install Manager will be launched.

The Install manager can be launched at any time from Start Menu > Program Files > Contensis > Contensis Install Manager.

Choose installation type

You must select whether this is going to be a fresh installation of Contensis or whether you are upgrading an existing instance.

Specify your CMS URL

If you are creating a new instance of Contensis then you will be asked to provide the URL which will be used to access it,the most common naming convention is https://cms.mydomain.com.

If upgrading, you will be asked to select the instance to upgrade, from a dropdown menu of available installations.

Choose the components to install

The installer allows parts of a Contensis instance to be installed or upgraded independently. These options are available to support some advanced configurations. This allows for greater scalability as each component can be installed on its own machine, giving access to dedicated resources per process.

We are assuming in this example that the CMS server will host the database, user interface, services, messaging framework and search, this is the most common scenario. In this scenario you would tick all five components.

Component upgrades

If you are performing an upgrade then two sub-options will appear under the Database option:

  • Deploy test sites immediately after upgrade
  • Deploy live sites immediately after upgrade (not recommended)

After an upgrade, the publishing servers are put into a pending-upgrade state by default. The upgrades can then be confirmed in the CMS, allowing you to test each site independently.

Ticking the immediate upgrade boxes will skip the confirmation step and the publishing servers will start to upgrade immediately after the installation. These options are provided for developmental purposes and are not recommended for live servers.

Database connection details

Next, you need to provide the details to your database server. You'll need to provide the database server name, database name and user name and password for the user to connect to the database.

User interface path

Enter the path where you want the Contensis web interface files to be located. The installer will copy the files into this folder. If the folder doesn't exist the installer will create it for you.

Contensis messaging framework

This screen enables you to specify the IP address of the server that the Contensis messaging framework is being installed on.The installer will automatically populate this field with the IP address of the server.

This setting can be changed in the CMS after install by editing the MessagingServer_Address global setting.

Silent install

By default, the Install automatically tick box is ticked. This installs the prerequisite software silently, without prompting you for additional details during the installation.

If however you want to select the installation options for the prerequisites (e.g. install folder), then untick the box.

Contensis search

This screen enables you to specify the host name or IP address of the server that Contensis search is being installed on.The installer will automatically populate this field with the host name of the server, but you can change it if required.

If you would like to install the Contensis search on a separate server you can follow the separate guide to  installing Contensis search.

This setting can be changed in the CMS after install by editing the Elastic_Instances global setting.

Silent install

By default, the Install automatically tick box is ticked. This installs the prerequisite software silently, without prompting you for additional details during the installation.

If however you want to select the installation options for the prerequisites (e.g. install folder), then untick the box.

Content owner

You now have the option to define who should be assigned as the  content owner of existing pages and content items in your CMS.

The user who created the page or the content item is the default, but it is possible to set the owner to the person who most recently modified the page or item. You can also choose not to apply a content owner.

License key and install

Now you need to enter your Contensis license key. Information about your licence key can be found on the  licensing page.

You can now run the install or upgrade process. You will see a green progress bar to give you an idea of long the process will take.

View results and confirmation

The log of the installation will be displayed on the next screen, this can be copied and pasted to include in emails, etc.

Its important to review the log to ensure no errors have been reported. If you are happy with everything, click through to the next step, where you will be shown a confirmation screen. This will show you the username and password for the installation.

Once this process has been completed you can then  configure the user interface.
