Log search overview

The Log Search allows you to identify issues in your code, Contensis or associated database and services. It provides a powerful way to look through logs generated by multiple parts of the Contensis system and uses the search framework to filter through the logs.

Launch the log search

Access to the Log Search is limited to users in the System Administrators group.

  1. Click Search in the left toolbar to open the Contensis search
  2. Press the Logs tab to load the Log Search interface.

By default, the Log Search will display logs based on the Fatal and Error log levels. For more information on logging levels and their intended use see the Configure and manage log article.

Interface overview

The Log Search interface is broken down into three main parts:

Query builder

The query builder allows you to create a set of filters to reduce the logs you see in the log list.

Log list (results)

The log list displays the logs that match the query defined by the query builder. 

Detail panel

The detail panel displays further information on the log that is currently selected in the log list. You can use the Copy to clipboard function above the panel to share the log message in its raw text form.

Filter logs

Filters provide the main mechanism to sort through logs in the Log Search. A filter is made up of three parts.

The property determines what the Log Search should be looking at to begin its search. There are a number of properties you can use to filter logs in Contensis. By default, the Log Search will be filtering by log level (Fatal and Errors). There are a range of filters including Log ID, MessageLevel, Date, Method, Source and Stack Trace.

Operators will update based on the property you set, these include values such as equal to (=), not equal to (!=), less than (<), greater than (>). These operators allow you to refine your log search.

Depending on the type of property you are using, the input field will change allowing you to select from drop down lists, tag selectors, using an autosuggest or by entering a text or numeric value.

Create a filter

The Log Search will show all errors from across Contensis and – depending on the log levels set – you may be dealing with a large volume of data. Creating a filter will help you begin to narrow down the information you are looking for.

  1. Select a property: using the dropdown list, select a property to filter the logs with.
  2. Set the type of operator: the property you selected in the first step will determine the operator values you see. The default is usually equal to.
  3. Provide a value: Once the operator is set, you’ll be able to set a value. The value field supports various input types depending on the property. So for example, if you’ve selected a date, you will find a date picker, tags: a tag selector will be present allowing you to make your selection.

Once you’ve set the filter criteria, press the Add Filter button and the results will be displayed in the log list to the right.

Edit a filter

If you have set up multiple filters to reduce the number of logs you see, you might want to edit a value or operator to change the results that are currently displayed.

  1. Press on the filter in the query builder, its colour will change to indicate its been selected. The values set for the filter will be populated in the query dropdowns and you can update the values.
  2. The Add Filter button will switch to be an Update Filter button, so you to approve the changes applied to the filter.
  3. Click Update Filter. The results will update according to your amended filter settings.

Remove a filter

If you have applied multiple filters in the query builder, you can reduce its complexity by removing individual filters. Press the cross on a filter to remove it. The results pane will update to reflect the change.

Reset all filters

If your filter query is getting too big or it does not return the results as expected, you can press Clear Filters above the filters to reset.
